Fiscal representation explained

Fiscal Representation in Switzerland: What Foreign Companies Need to Know

Foreign companies without a registered office or permanent establishment in Switzerland that become liable for Swiss VAT must appoint a tax representative domiciled in Switzerland – the so-called fiscal representative (Art. 67 Swiss VAT Act). As a rule, a company becomes liable for VAT once it generates a worldwide turnover of CHF 100,000 per year and supplies goods or services in Switzerland.

As your fiscal representative we handle the VAT registration with the Federal Tax Administration, serve as your domicile for service of process in Switzerland, prepare your VAT returns and answer enquiries from the authorities – so you can focus on your business.

Frequently Asked Questions

A fiscal representative is the legally required tax representative of a foreign company in Switzerland (Art. 67 Swiss VAT Act). They serve as the domicile for service of process, act as the point of contact for the Federal Tax Administration (FTA) and ensure that VAT obligations are met correctly. The tax liability itself remains with the represented company.

Foreign companies without a registered office or permanent establishment in Switzerland that are liable for Swiss VAT – for example mail-order and online retailers, assembly and construction companies or providers of digital services. Without a fiscal representative, VAT registration is not possible.

As a rule, a company becomes liable for VAT once its worldwide turnover reaches CHF 100,000 per year and it supplies goods or services in Switzerland. Special rules apply to mail order and online platforms. We will gladly assess your specific situation free of charge.

Costs depend on scope: a one-off registration plus ongoing returns. After the initial call you receive a transparent, non-binding quote with clearly itemised services. In addition, the FTA requires a security deposit, provided as a bank guarantee or cash deposit.

We assess your tax liability, compile the documents, file the registration with the FTA and arrange the security deposit. Once registered you receive your Swiss VAT number, and we take over the ongoing returns.

Special rules apply to mail-order retailers: anyone exceeding a certain turnover with low-value consignments to Switzerland is deemed a domestic supplier and becomes liable for VAT. Separate provisions have also applied to online platforms since 2025. We check which rules apply to your business model.

Companies carrying out assembly, installation or supply-and-install work in Switzerland quickly become liable for VAT – often from the very first project if worldwide turnover exceeds CHF 100,000. We handle registration and returns so your projects stay on track.

Yes, the FTA generally requires security from foreign companies – as a guarantee from a Swiss bank or as a cash deposit. The amount depends on the expected turnover. We advise you on the most suitable option and handle the process.

Once all documents and the security deposit are in place, registration with the FTA is usually completed within a few weeks. For urgent projects – such as upcoming assembly work – we prioritise accordingly.

On request, yes. As a fiduciary firm in Zurich we offer digital accounting, payroll administration, tax advisory and support with company formation in Switzerland alongside fiscal representation – for instance if you later wish to set up your own Swiss company.

We advise and correspond in English, German and Japanese – a particular strength for internationally active companies and firms with ties to Japan.
